Heritage days of european cemeteries

From 26 May to 1 June 2014, the Žale Public Company organises free guided tours of cultural heritage of the Žale cemetery.

The City of Ljubljana is one of the founders of the Association of Significant Cemeteries in Europe (ASCE), which was established in 2001. Within the Association, the Žale Public Company plays an active role.

The aim of the Association is to raise the awareness about the importance of cultural, historic and artistic heritage of cemeteries as well as to share the experience in the field of preservation and promotion of cemeteries. One of the projects organised by the Association of Culturally Significant Cemeteries in Europe aiming to bring cemeteries closer to Europeans is the week dedicated to discovering the European cemeteries – “Heritage Days of European Cemeteries”. This year, the project celebrates its 10th anniversary.

From 26 May to 1 June 2014, free guided tours, lectures, concerts and exhibitions will take place in European cities and countries. In Ljubljana, the project will be carried out at the Žale cemetery with free guided tours presenting the rich cultural, historic and artistic heritage of the cemetery.

The guide will welcome visitors twice a day, i.e. at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., in front of the administrative building of the Plečnik’s Žale. The tour presents the famous work of the architect Plečnik, graves of the renowned Slovenians and other important parts of the Žale cemetery, which is actually an open-air museum.

Further information is available on the website of Žale Public Company.
