In memoriam: Acad. Prof. Dr. Stanko Kristl

The Honorary Citizen Prof. Dr. Stanko Kristl, one of the most prominent Slovenian architects, researcher, innovator and humanist, designed, among other things, the diagnostic-therapeutic service facility of the University Medical Centre Ljubljana and the Mladi rod kindergarten in Ljubljana, passed away.

Acad. Prof. Dr. Stanko Kristl was awarded the title Honorary Citizen of Ljubljana in 2023, and at that time, we wrote in the justification: »A student of Professor Edvard Ravnikar places a human being at the centre of his extraordinary creative opus. He firmly believes that architecture should not be reduced to merely serving the needs of the construction industry; designing space must be the fruit of intellectual research supported by sociology and psychology. The Slovenian architectural heritage of the 20th and 21st centuries is enriched by his numerous professional publications, lectures, competitions and research, and above all, by 61 innovative urban and architectural realizations – many of them were awarded state recognitions. One of the most prominent architects of our time left four visionary projects to Ljubljana, where he lived and worked most of his life: the diagnostic-therapeutic service facility of the University Medical Centre Ljubljana, the Mladi rod kindergarten, the apartment building in Prule and the atrium houses at the street Borsetova ulica.

The professor emeritus, full member of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts, and recipient of all the highest awards in the field of architecture actively calls for the idea of »humane architecture« even in his venerable 102nd year of life.«

The Honorary Citizen will be kept in respectful memory.
