On 8 April 2013, Mayor Zoran Janković welcomed UNESCO Director General Irina Georgieva Bokova to City Hall.
In 2010, the Slovenian capital Ljubljana held the title of UNESCO World Book Capital. The programme for ‘Ljubljana, World Book Capital 2010’ brought about a range of original initiatives to broaden access to books and to promote literature, writers, books and reading. Various organisations from public institutes and publishing houses to NGOs carried out 92 diverse projects, while altogether within the scope of the programme there was a grand total of 1,651 individual events.
UNESCO – the United Nations’ Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation – was set up in 1945. Its main objective is to contribute to peace and security through partnership with countries in the fields of education, science and culture with the intention to deepen the general respect for justice, legal rights and human rights and fundamental freedoms. There are currently 192 member countries in UNESCO, and Slovenia has been a member since 1992.
