Islamic religious and cultural centre

At Ljubljana City Hall on Friday 18 November 2011, the winner was announced of the international architectural competition for the conceptual design solution of an Islamic religious and cultural centre in Ljubljana.

The international architectural competition for the Islamic religious and cultural centre in Ljubljana attracted 44 conceptual designs, of which 16 were domestic and 28 from abroad.

The jury, which was presided over by Deputy Mayor of Ljubljana Prof Janez Koželj, selected Bevk Perović architects as the winners. In the words of Prof Koželj, the solution meets all the outset baseline tasks and is also open to possible improvements. He said the building will be intimate, the space open, the image centre will be simple and will be a mix of the abstract language of contemporary European architecture that reflects the modernistic cubic shape. Otherwise Prof Koželj stressed that all of the architectural projects had been produced to the highest standard.

Mayor of Ljubljana Zoran Janković said that he saw this project as being of equal importance to the Stožice project. The Mayor of Ljubljana believes that all those who have a religion should have a place to observe it.
It is anticipated that the foundation stone of the Islamic religious and cultural centre in Ljubljana will be laid in a year’s time.
