KINODVOR 10: city cinema – the cornerstone of cinema culture

Last year, when we celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Kinodvor City Cinema, almost 120,000 visitors saw over 345 film programmes at 2071 screenings. 2018 was specially marked by the strong presence of Slovenian film.

10 years of Kinodvor

A decade of fulfilling the vision of a city cinema putting film and viewers at the centre of social and cultural happening has opened the doors to a diverse and recognizable programme spectrum for viewers of all generations, needs and interests. The establishment and support of the municipal institute for cinematography have brought changes and effects beyond the local significance: the revitalisation and digitalisation of the Art Cinema Network of Slovenia, the national film education programme development strategy, and especially the new understanding of the significance of a city cinema, which is an important cornerstone of film culture and development of film audience. Based on this together with the results of the city cinema, which is recording peak attendance with 120,000 visitors within the available space capacities since 2012, Kinodvor and the City of Ljubljana are developing a plan to expand to a city miniplex in the Ajdovščina underpass, foreseen for 2022.

Successful 2018

In 2018 we recorded 119,611 visitors, we hosted 11,922 of them at the Cinema under the stars with no substitute screenings in Kinodvor because of hall renovations, and in addition some 5,200 viewers saw admission-free screenings of four film classics at the Summer Cinema in Congress Square. The two projects we are running in close cooperation with the public institute Ljubljana Castle, that is, the public institute Ljubljana Tourism are designed with the aim of popularizing film culture and enriching high-quality cultural and tourist services in Ljubljana for local and foreign visitors. The film education programmes for young audiences include Kinobalon for children and young people, Kinotrip – the youth for the youth and the Kinodvor Programme for Schools with 38,912 viewers last year, among them 13,690 saw the regular Kinobalon programme, 1,872 the regular Kinotrip programme with the festival, and 23,395 pupils and students screenings within the school programme.

Film festival in Kinodvor

In 2018 many film creators and experts visited Kinodvor within the scope of film festivals Kinodvor is preparing in cooperation with co-producers and partners – organizers of international film festivals. In the past year, in addition to Kinodvor’s Festival Kinotrip and the Festival of Culture and Art Education Beavers, the city cinema hosted 10 international festivals, more than any year before, with 20,196 visitors, in total. The attendance at cinema socializing events and city cinema programme cycles is also rising: at special occasions Horror Night and Kinosloga. Retrosex are standing out, and in 2018 the new programme Early Bird: Festival at Five joined numerous programmes for target audiences.
