Kinodvor is celebrating this year

The city cinema Kinodvor is celebrating three anniversaries this year – the centenary of the cinema on Kolodvorska, the twentieth anniversary of the art cinema and the fifteenth anniversary of the Public Institute Kinodvor. They prepared a whole series of events and a diverse program aimed at raising awareness of the significance and role of the city cinema as an urban cultural, creative and intergenerational social centre.

The centenary of the cinema on Kolodvorska

On 15 October 1923, the cinema Ljubljanski dvor opened. It was the first space designed specifically as a cinema, and with it Ljubljana got a luxurious »film theatre« of the type built in all European cities in the 1920s.

In October 2003, the Slovenian Cinematheque, in cooperation with the City of Ljubljana and the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia, opened the first art cinema in Ljubljana, naming it Kinodvor. In 2008, the City of Ljubljana founded the Public Institute Kinodvor, and in October of the same year, the city cinema Kinodvor began operating, thus celebrating its 15th anniversary in 2023.

What is the future of cinema?

»For the past three years, one of the most frequently asked questions has been what is the future of cinema. This was the topic of many professional meetings, including the last international conference of the Europa Cinemas Association. The meeting of over 600 representatives took place in a positive and optimistic atmosphere, as results showed once again that the experience of watching a film in a cinema has not lost its charm. And so, at Kinodvor, we are not alone in our belief that cinema has a future, also due to the large share of young audiences among visitors. They make up one-third of visitors at Kinodvor,« concludes Metka Dariš.
