Less packaging for less waste

In Ljubljana, we are once again joining the European Week for Waste Reduction, and this year, we are highlighting the importance of reducing the use of packaging.

At the City of Ljubljana, we are aware of the importance of the sustainable development of the city and the introduction of circular practices into everyday life, which is why we promote environmentally friendly practices with various activities and measures. Last year, Ljubljana was selected as one of the 100 climate-neutral and smart European cities by 2030 as part of a mission with which the European Commission aims to accelerate the progress of the most ambitious European cities on the path to climate neutrality. As a circular, carbon-neutral city by 2030, Ljubljana will monitor the impact of activities on the environment, support transparent operations and interdisciplinary cooperation, and strengthen the factors of a healthy environment.

As part of this year's campaign, we have also put the messages on waste collection vehicles emptying underground collection points in the centre of Ljubljana.

The highest share of separately collected waste

Our city has the best waste management system among all the 27 European capitals, as we achieved the largest share of separately collected household waste. In 2022, this amounted to as much as 70 percent of all municipal waste.
Despite the already exceptional results, we want the citizens to get actively involved in the waste reduction and sustainable waste management campaign.

Do you know what your carbon footprint is?

As part of the European PSLifestyle project, in which Ljubljana also participates, we have designed a carbon calculator that will help you calculate your carbon footprint and learn more about the impact your daily activities have on the environment. Based on your habits, you will also receive tips for choosing a sustainable lifestyle – a plan to save time and money, improve your quality of life and contribute to a greener future.
