Ljubljana: capital idea for a spring break

In its edition of 12 March, 2014, the renowned British newspaper The Independent has recommended its readers to visit Ljubljana for their spring break and presented the capital as a pleasant city with culture and gourmet delights at its very heart.

The article using an interesting pun in its title “Ljubljana: Capital Idea for a Spring Break” is actually a sort of excerpt from the “Great Escapes” edition issued by Lonely Planet.

The Independent begins the article describing Ljubljana as a place “where virtually everything of national importance begins, ends or is taking place”. However, it adds that the capital puts on a more lively face in spring and summer time when the old city centre is flooded with café tables and street performers. It recommends readers to begin their sight-seeing with taking a seat on the steps encircling the statue of the poet France Prešeren. It mentions the colourful architecture, the works of architect Plečnik, Baroque boulevards and streets, renovated Slovenian National Opera and Ballet Theatre, the Metelkova city and the Museum of Contemporary Art and suggests ending the tour with dinner at the Ljubljana Castle. The article also advises a trip to Maribor, the capital of Slovenian Styria, during the autumn grape harvest of the oldest single grape-growing vine in the world. The article is available at the following link.

The Italian television Sky TV presented Ljubljana completely covered in snow in its programme “Saluti … da Ljubljana”. The Italian TV team, paying a visit to Ljubljana in the beginning of February, was surprised by a thick snow cover. However, the attractive host David Romano and his team made a truly youthful and dynamic presentation of white Ljubljana – yet another proof of the city's attractive power and unique appearance in every season. The team plans a new visit to Ljubljana in another season to record other images. The programme is available at the following link.

Ljubljana is also listed as one of the 10 best cities in Europe to see from a boat or a bridge by the Earth Traveling website. More on the following link.
