Ljubljana, city of cycling

From 28 to 31 August 2014, Ljubljana hosted the Amateur Road Cycling World Championship, UWCT Final Ljubljana 2014.

For a second year in a row – after the last year's European Basketball Championship – Ljubljana hosted the top sports event. The UWCT Final Ljubljana 2014 importantly contributed to the recognition of the Slovenian capital on the global sports scale and at the same time placed it on the map of cyclists' cities.

The best cyclists of different age groups (9 men and 8 women categories) participating in the world championship had to qualify for the main event in 10 qualification events. These were held all over the world as a part of the UWCT Tour with its final and most important event being the world championship.

1,545 cyclists from 43 countries took part in the competition. Among all the countries, the Australian team was the largest with 82 cyclists. Apart from the athletes from the more cycling-oriented countries, the competition included also the cyclists from Uganda, United Arab Emirates and some other exotic cycling countries. Also one female cyclist and 13 men cyclists older than 70 years participated in the race.

The championship began on Thursday, 28 August 2014 with the chronometer. On the next day, the relay starting event at 6 p.m. was followed by the opening ceremony at 8 p.m. in the Ljubljana city centre. The highlight of the championship was on Sunday, 31 August 2014 with the long and short road race. The start and finish was located in the BTC City Ljubljana while the race led the competitors through the cycling route of the annual cycling marathon Franja BTC City.

Ljubljana, City of Cycling

According to the “Ljubljana 2025” vision, Ljubljana developed into a sustainable, green and sports-oriented city trying to provide a quality life to all its citizens of all generations. In the light of this, a special attention is paid to the field of urban cycling, since we want to see a greater number of people using bicycles for their every day errands. Our endeavours to promote cycling already reap the rewards which are recognised also beyond our national borders. In spring, Ljubljana received the 2013 European Mobility Week reward for successfully implemented activities during the last year's European Mobility Week – with the special emphasis on the cycling. Ljubljana is also the only city to receive this award twice.

Our efforts in the field of the sustainable development won us also a prestigious title “European Green Capital 2016”. This is the highest award of the European Commission in the field of the sustainable development of cities and a great honour and acknowledgement that Ljubljana's established sustainable development is on the right track as well as additional commitment to stay on this route.

The successful operation of BicikeLJ, a self-service rent-a-bike system shows that the cycling is extremely popular in Ljubljana. In just over two-year of its existence, BicikeLJ recorded two million of rentals. This means that every bike is rented six times a day in average, and that about 55 thousand citizens and visitors took a ride with these bikes. The BicikeLJ network expanded to BTC City last month with three new stations – near Citypark, Atlantis and BTC City market.
