Ljubljana, earth-friendly municipality

For the third consecutive year the City of Ljubljana has been awarded the “Planet Earth-Friendly Municipality” title under the Municipalities category.

The evaluation committee has thus reaffirmed successful and towards sustainability oriented efforts of Ljubljana – Green Capital of Europe 2016 for a better quality of life. “With numerous activities and experience, the City of Ljubljana can set an example to other municipalities,” was stated in the explanatory note.

Among other things, the explanatory note for Ljubljana highlighted the fact that we take care of the city forests, have for years been investing in their infrastructure and we are leading in wood construction in the field of public infrastructure as well as in the use of woody biomass in the energy industry. They also commended the good performance in rehabilitation of the municipality-owned forests following the effects of ice damage. Municipality of Ljubljana is the only one among the participating municipalities, which has until now produced a strategic noise map as part of the requirements of the Directive 2002/49/EC and this year also modernised it according to the changes in environment. They pointed out that we are very active and successful in supporting local and organic foods as well as in waste management, in particular its re-use. In presenting the municipality we focus on environmentally friendly activities, however, what is also commendable is that we provide access to information and a range of options for our employees to act in a more environmentally friendly fashion and thus help create a healthy working environment. According to the Committee, Ljubljana is also an example of good practice of how to realise tourism development and implementation of sustainable guidelines at the city level.
