Ljubljana even greener with new tree-lined streets

In Ljubljana we have taken into account numerous citizens’ initiatives and planted new trees alongside some sections of streets and roads, where around 170 trees are planned. We are going to plant as many as 400 trees, in total, in different locations.

The new tree-lined streets:

  • Goriška ulica,
  • Hajdrihova ulica,
  • Lepa pot,
  • Ob dolenjski železnici,
  • Celovška cesta 226.

Within the scope of the project we are also doing maintenance work on tree-lined streets, and so, we are going to replace 92 trees, in total, on Prešernova cesta, Posavskega ulica, Verovškova cesta and Čufarjeva ulica, as they are worn-out, that is, in the arborist’s opinion they need to be replaced.

In addition, we are going to plant approximately 140 trees in other parks and alongside streets to replace individual missing trees. And so, we are going to plant as many as 400 trees, in total.

Numerus benefits of trees

Trees have a beneficial effect on the psychophysical well-being of people in the city and significantly contribute to the health, beauty and functionality of the city environment. As trees have an impact on the temperature and humidity of the air in the city, they block dust particles, noise, wind and rainwater, produce oxygen, shield from solar radiation and clean the air, they are significantly contributing to the quality of the living environment for people, animals and plants in the city.

Care for trees

A dedicated group within the public waste management company Snaga is responsible for taking care of the trees, with a certified arborist as a member of the group. In their work of taking care of city trees they are using a digitalised register of city trees, each tree on public surfaces is visually inspected once a year by experts from the public company Snaga, they evaluate its state and on this basis they formulate a plan for its care.
If possible, we are trying to protect especially those trees which have reached a certain age and with it a certain circumference. Namely, trees are valuable for the city, as they are producing oxygen, deadening noise, providing shadow, they are filtering, cooling and humidifying the air, naturally grown trees are beautiful and all their positive roles are increasing the quality of living.
We are following arboriculture rules (EAC – European Tree Pruning Guide) for pruning trees.

In the City of Ljubljana we are making an effort to preserve every tree

Within the scope of regular maintenance, the public company Snaga is taking care of approximately 40,000 trees on surfaces, defined in the maintenance programme of the Department for Commercial Activities and Traffic of the City of Ljubljana. The maintenance of other trees is the responsibility of owners or land managers, which means that they also have to make sure their trees are not obstructing anyone or pose a traffic safety hazard.
