Ljubljana gained a new thematic route – The Path among the Alders

A new 3-kilometre thematic route has come to life at Rakova jelša – The Path among the Alders, leading visitors through a mosaic of meadows, fields, hedges and trenches.

On it, visitors can learn about the life of some characteristic but increasingly endangered inhabitants of the Ljubljana Marsh, such as the European pond turtle, the ornate bluet, the hermit beetle, the yellow-bellied toad, the scarce large blue and the corncrake. The trail is suitable for both individual and group tours. The 3-kilometre circular thematic Path among the Alders is suitable for visiting on foot or by bicycle, and you can stop at eight stations, which are equipped with various interpretation tools and urban equipment. Each station also has a QR code for audio texts and recordings of some presented species. You can visit the path individually or with a professional guide from the Ljubljana Marsh Nature Park Public Institute.

The Path among the Alders is only one of the results of the PoLJUBA project, within the framework of which numerous measures were implemented during its duration of over five years on a total of 177 ha of land to restore and preserve wetland habitats and some of the most endangered animal and plant species in the Ljubljana Marsh.

The partners of the project are the Ljubljana Marsh Nature Park Public Institute, the Institute of the Republic of Slovenia for Nature Conservation, the Society for the Observation and Study of Birds of Slovenia DOPPS-Birdlife Slovenia and the Regional Development Agency of the Ljubljana Urban Region.

The four-year project, with a total value of 4.12 million euros, is 80 percent co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund, and the Republic of Slovenia contributes the remaining 20 percent.
