Ljubljana joins the zero waste network

On 8 September, 2014, Ljubljana joined the Zero Waste Europe network becoming the first EU capital to be included in the aforementioned network.

The Zero Waste strategy means that the local community or municipality strengthens the first three priorities in the field of waste management (prevention, reuse and recycling), where Zero Waste means zero waste in landfills and incinerators.

The concrete objectives of Ljubljana include reduction of the annual volume of residual waste to 80 kilograms per capita, lowering the share of landfilled waste to less than 40 kilograms per capita and exceeding the 70 percent share of separately collected waste. The Snaga company will achieve this with further improvements in the waste collection system, enhanced cooperation with various shareholders (businesses, educational institutions, non-governmental organizations, building managers, etc.) and intensive communication with users.

Let us add that this summer the City Council of the City of Ljubljana approved the waste management strategy or the Zero Waste Plan for the period 2014-2035, as the vision of the City of Ljubljana is to become a municipality that manages its resources in an economic and sustainable manner, generating green jobs and where valuable resources do not end up in landfills nor food in garbage.
