Ljubljana loves to read

The days between 8 September and 9 October are even more characterised by books and reading than usual because that is when the national month of joined reading takes place. This year the central theme is reading and movement.

Ljubljana has also joined the campaign. The Ljubljana City Library has prepared a varied program for the promotion of reading and literary events for adults and children, including book presentations, literary meetings and reading gatherings, discussions about books, lectures on traveling around the world, fairy-tale hours for children, as well as a walk along the routes of literary Ljubljana.

Ljubljana reads

As part of the Ljubljana Reads project, ever since 2008, we have been encouraging the development of reading culture among various target groups with the aim of emphasizing the significance of family reading in early childhood, the importance of books for individual development, and at the same time, by purchasing selected books, we support and promote finest domestic creators and ensure the availability of quality original fiction for children. So far, we have given 19 first-rate original Slovenian picture books to over 115,000 children. Every year, three-year-olds receive an original Slovenian book at the regular paediatric check-up, first-graders on the first day of school, and fourth-graders when they visit the school library.

Ljubljana, UNESCO City of Literature

In 2015, Ljubljana joined the UNESCO Creative Cities Network; as a city of literature, we are committed to promoting innovative approaches to encourage reading and preserving the importance of books as a vehicle for human development. Since 2017, Ljubljana is also a Reading-Friendly Municipality.
