Ljubljana sends help to flooded areas
The City of Ljubljana joined the Republic of Slovenia to send help to the areas in Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina devastated by the most catastrophic floods in the last 100 years.
On Saturday, 17 May 2014, the City of Ljubljana sent the units of Public Fire-Fighting Service to the distressed areas and allocated financial means to its sister cities.
Water Rescue Unit, consisting of four firemen of Ljubljana Fire Brigade, was dispatched to the area of Bosnia and Herzegovina early in the morning of Saturday, 17 May 2014. On Saturday and Sunday the team assisted in rescue operations in the areas of Prijedor, Tukovo, Gomjenica and Raškovac. It mainly took care of the delivery of food, water and other supplies to the local people trapped in the flooded houses. The unit of four also assisted in evacuation and transport of people to the medical teams. On Monday, 19 May 2014, the firemen of the Ljubljana Fire Brigade were transferred from Prijedor to Odžak (SW of Šamac) to help people with transport, evacuations and supply. They also took part in the procedure for disposal of cadavers. On Wednesday, 21 May 2014, a new team of Ljubljana Fire Brigade firemen arrived to replace the first. Their activities in the area are expected to be concluded on Sunday, 25 May 2014.
14 members of Volunteer Fire Departments Bizovik, Barje and Črnuče (with two rescue boats and the emergency medical team) were sent to the area of the Republic of Serbia on Saturday, 17 May 2014, at noon to be accommodated in Belgrade. On Sunday, 18 May 2014, they worked in the village of Kupinovo (Municipality of Sremska Mitrovica) assisting local people in evacuation and conducting water rescue operations. The next day, they were dispatched to perform the same operations in the town of Morović (Municipality of Šid).
Apart from the abovementioned assistance, the City of Ljubljana allocated 20 thousand euro of financial assistance from the budget reserve fund, and addressed an appeal to their associates from the City Administration and public companies and institutes working under its auspices to collect supplies. It also plans to organise a big charity concert with the musicians from Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
