Ljubljana, the emw award finalist

Ljubljana is shortlisted as one of the three finalists among the 30 participant cities from 12 countries for the European Mobility Week Award 2013.

Last year was Ljubljana's 12th consecutive year participating in the European Mobility Week, the most widespread campaign for sustainable mobility, set traditionally in the week between 16 and 22 September. We have aimed for the environment and society friendly mobility by introducing diverse activities. The leading idea of the 2013 EMW was “Clean Air, It’s Your Move!” (Vaš korak za čistejši zrak) to remind us we can all make a difference and contribute to a cleaner air by slightly altering our travelling habits and remarkably influence the quality of life in cities where motor traffic is the main cause for air pollution.

We collaborated with numerous people and organisations to prepare a 9-week-long programme of activities and 17 events in the framework of the European Mobility Week campaign. The two permanent measures of our utmost pride:

- the Car-Free Day on 22 September restricted motor traffic on Slovenska Cesta in the Šubičeva Ulica and Gosposvetska Cesta section – the area was revamped to encourage walking, cycling and public transportation.

- the introduction of Kavalir 3, the closed electric transport vehicle which complements the first two open vehicles. The ride operates throughout the whole year regardless of the weather.

The European Commission annually nominates 10 cities for the European Mobility Week Award which recognizes those who encouraged the use of “smarter” ways of transport. This year we were shortlisted as one of the top three together with Budapest (Hungary) and Östersund (Sweden), while we have been placed among the ten most diligent cities in 2012. The winner of the European Mobility Week Award 2013 will be announced in Brussels on 24 March 2014.

Ljubljana has already received the European Mobility Week Award in 2004.
