Ljubljana tourism breaks records in 2011

In 2011, Ljubljana was visited by 423,650 tourists, exceeding the target set by the Ljubljana Tourism public institute.

Official data from the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia (which does not include accommodation facilities with fewer than 10 beds) shows that we in Ljubljana recorded 423,650 tourist arrivals, a 7.7% rise on 2010, and 790.544 overnights, 7% up on 2010 and more than the target set by Ljubljana Tourism for this period (which was 760,000 overnights).

The proportion of international guests remained just about the same – with 96%, Ljubljana is in first place among European capitals in terms of share of foreign tourists.

By number of overnights, Italians took first place (78,811), followed by Germans (57,138), guests from the UK (48,946), and then guests from the following countries: USA (40,170), France (39,578), Spain (34,228), Austria (31,962), Serbia (29,568), Croatia (26,010) and then the category of ‘other Asian countries’ (22,094).

Breaking Travel News

Ljubljana’s popularity with tourists has also been picked up at Breaking Travel News, a leading website aimed at travel organisers, travel agents, agencies dealing with airline bookings, event and meeting organisers and others professionally involved in tourism.

A recent study of tourism in European capitals has shown that Ljubljana is among the three European capitals with the highest growth level of tourist overnights in the last five years. In terms of two criteria analysed – the number of international tourist overnights and the growth of bed capacities – Ljubljana is ranked first.

This study was carried out last December by Roland Berger Strategy Consultants, which analysed tourist indicators in 24 European capitals.

The analysis included seven criteria: the number of overnights, the growth in the number of overnights, growth in bed capacity, which creates added value (revenue per room) and internationality (the share of European and non-European tourists), accessibility (the number of direct flights) and the number of congresses.
