Nebotičnik
Nebotičnik – one of the city's best-recognised buildings, and thereby also a symbol of Ljubljana – is celebrating its 80th birthday.
Nebotičnik, or the Skyscraper, opened on 21 February 1933, designed by architect Vladimir Šubic, and was built on a site where a medieval monastery had once stood.
Nebotičnik has some 16 foundation piles, reaching 18 metres in depth, and is thus one of Ljubljana's most earthquake-resistant buildings. It is something over 70 metres in height and upon completion was Ljubljana's and Europe's tallest building.
Nebotičnik remained the tallest building in Ljubljana all the way to 1993, when it was overtaken by the World Trade Centre, which rises 72 metres, while two years ago the title of Ljubljana's tallest building was taken by the Crystal Palace at 89 metres.
The ground floor and first five floors of Nebotičnik are business premises, while the 6th to the 9th floors are residential. The top floor is a well-known cafe with a terrace which offers wonderful views across Ljubljana.
Many happy returns, Nebotičnik!
