New kiddies’ play area at kinodvor

A green space on Kolodvorska cesta near Kinodvor in central Ljubljana has been fitted out with kiddies’ play equipment.

The concept of setting up a children’s playground on Kolodvorska ulica arose from the Map of Wishes project, organised by the prostoRož group as part of last year’s Young Lions festival.

The playground on Kolodvorska ulica is designed as a public open space which is accessible to all and can be used in various ways. The play equipment has been selected with users of various age groups and not just the youngest children in mind. Thus mums and toddlers as well as visitors to Ljubljana on their way to or from the nearby railway station can relax in the shade of trees. There is also a longer bench alongside the play area so that older generations can watch the children at play.

The tree trunks and canopy lend the area a special character. The real woody nature of the space was the starting point for designing the playground and equipment selection. Climbing and observing the tree canopy were selected as the leading themes.

As a counterweight to playing – climbing, which develop physical fitness, a hammock has been suspended at the end of the playground for relaxing and observing the tree canopy.

The edge of the play area is clearly defined with a wooden boundary. Gravel has been used as a safe base within the area. On the southern side a ramp has been installed for easier access with pushchairs.

The playground was opened by City of Ljubljana Deputy Mayor Prof Janez Koželj on Saturday 20 October.
