New residents at ljubljana zoo
Ljubljana Zoo is now home to two Siberian tigers, Vita in Vito.
The tigers will live in a modern enclosure, comprising two larger external spaces in natural woodland which can work as a single or two separate spaces, and two internal areas. As soon as the tigers are ready for release into their enclosure, visitors will be able to observe them through large glass panels with a larger central observation point and three smaller ones. The enclosure will also have 'furniture' which the tigers need for their wellbeing, as there are two ponds, a marsh, stream, with logs to climb and platforms to rest on. Visitors will be able to get a closer look at the tigers at presentations, feeding time and training in their 'living room'.
The two-year-old female Siberian tiger came to Ljubljana from Magdeburg Zoo, with the six-month younger male arriving from Šošto Zoo in Hungary.
The Director of Ljubljana Zoo Zdenka Ban Fischinger is pleased with developments in 2013, as they have finally begun to resolve some of their most pressing problems after a series of minor renovations. “We have demolished half of the old menagerie and in its place built one of the largest enclosures for tigers in Europe. The huge difference between the two enclosures clearly shows the direction of the zoo's development to the benefit of the animals and visitors. We are grateful to our owners the City of Ljubljana and our sponsors NLB Vita Life Insurance for providing financial assistance in the renovations”. The project cost is estimated at just over half a million euros.
