South-east part of the castle walls at Šance has been renovated. We have renovated a part of the remains of the fortifications on the castle hill, which was between 1938 and 1939 reworked into a promenade by the architect Jože Plečnik and his team. The renovation, which started on March 15, comprised of a reconstruction of the walls, main stairway, columns, fence, lodges and landscaping the surroundings.

In 2014 we commenced with the first set of procedures, the reconstraction of walls and endangered panoramic terrace, this year, though, we began with the renovation and partial reconstruction of the remaining part of Šance and the surrounding area. On Tuesday, 31 July 2018, we thus opened the renovated area, where the visitors can now enjoy their free time.

Under the watchful eye of the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Slovenia

The castle walls at Šance have the status of a cultural monument of national importance according to the Order declaring the work of architect Jože Plečnik in Ljubljana a cultural monument of national importance.

The project was carried out under the supervision of conservator in charge of Plečnik’s heritage Irena Vesel from the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Slovenia, Regional Unit Ljubljana.

The basis for the reconstruction of individual parts and details of Šance were Plečnik’s sketch (1934), archival photos of Peter Naglič (1936–1939) and drawings of Boris Kobe (1939).

Major changes during the renovation occured with the reconstruction of seperate details: reconstruction of the stairs, fence in the lodge, fence in the alcove and gaps in the lower stairway.

At Štance Plečnik has created a monument to history and has restored to a pile of ruins its medieval function of a defensive wall. He added to it new axes, created new arches and openings and thus created interesting views of the city below the castle hill.

The project documentation was provided by ABR Plus d.o.o., project designer in charge Gregor Rihar. Renovation of the south-east part of the walls of Šance on the castle hill was carried out by the company VG5 d.o.o., Tehnološki park 24, 1000 Ljubljana. Contract value is 297,058 excluding VAT.
