At midnight on 21 December 2011, Zoran Janković stood down from his position as Mayor, and Jani Möderndorfer from his position as Deputy Mayor.

The Mayor until now, Zoran Janković and his party (Zoran Janković’s List – Positive Slovenia) stood in pre-term elections to the National Assembly, which were held on 4 December 2011. The party took 28.51% of the votes and is now the largest party in the National Assembly, while Zoran Janković has become a Member of Parliament. As being an MP is incompatible with the post of Mayor, Zoran Janković has stood down pre-term from his position. At midnight on 21 December 2011, Jani Möderndorfer stood down pre-term from his position as Deputy Mayor, as at that moment he became a member of the Slovenian Parliament, too.

Zoran Janković has been mayor of Slovenian capital Ljubljana since October 2006 when he secured with the support of a clear majority of the citizens of Ljubljana (62.99% of votes cast) in the first round of balloting, while his list also obtained majority support of the voters in the elections to Ljubljana City Council, with Zoran Janković's List taking 23 of the 45 seats. In October 2010 he was re-elected, also in the first round, with a large majority of the votes cast (64.79%), and once again his list obtained majority support in the council elections, taking 25 of the 45 seats.

Since 22 December 2011 and until elections for a replacement Mayor take place, the role of Mayor is being performed pro tempore by Aleš Čerin. His title is ‘Deputy Mayor in pro tempore performance of the tasks of the Mayor of the City of Ljubljana’.

New mayoral elections will be held in Ljubljana on 25 March 2012.
