Providing space for culture professionals in Ljubljana

After the institute Cirkulacija 2 lost its premises at Tobačna in the beginning of the year, the City of Ljubljana offered them a space of 233 m2 in the Ajdovščina underpass. They are free to use it until the end of 2021 when we start working on the Miniplex – City Cinema.

Borut Savski, member of Cirkulacija 2, states that the institute is »very pleased with such a quick solution provided by the City of Ljubljana«. In his opinion, such readiness is far from expected, it is almost unbelievable. In his words, in the Ajdovščina underpass Cirkulacija 2 is going to continue to follow the principles it developed in previous years. »The artists’ house we have been declaring ever since its establishment should be a result of networking and cooperation at all these levels«.

At the same time we are searching for a solution for continued operation of Poligon. They have expressed their need for storage space already in November 2019 but they rejected the space offered to them. And a few days ago they also submitted a request for working space to the City of Ljubljana.

According to Mateja Demšič, the head of the Department for Culture of the City of Ljubljana, this is a clear indication why Ljubljana desperately needs the renovated Rog. All collectives, not only in the field of creative industries, but all artistic collectives that are researching non-science and art and are important for this city could get a space in Rog which is intended for such activities.

We are aware of the importance of culture in Ljubljana

In Ljubljana we have spaces at 93 locations providing production conditions for art and culture. We are leasing 248 spatial units covering over 17,000 m2, in total, without charge to nongovernmental organisations and individuals.
We have included the provision of additional spaces also in the programme Ljubljana – European Capital of Culture 2025. Namely, a significant part of the programme is devoted to concrete investments in production spaces which would enable the creation of new cultural and creative programmes, also among younger creators.
If Ljubljana wins the title European Capital of Culture 2025, these investments would be carried out already by 2025. They would make it possible for us to respond to the spatial challenges and reach the creative potential in the shortest time possible.
