Public orchard of the City of Ljubljana

The City of Ljubljana set up a public orchard on plots alongside the Path of Remembrance and Comradeship at Grba open to all residents and visitors to our city, where fruit will be available from midsummer to late autumn.

The orchard is made up of two parts. The south part is planted with apple trees, pear trees and old varieties of plum trees and on the northern part there are many other varieties of trees, some of which are less know to us. A row of apple trees separates both sections from the public paths.
On the south part there are 48 apple trees, 18 pear trees and 6 plum trees and on the north part 36 mulberry trees, medlars, service trees, rowans, quinces, persimmon trees, pawpaws, walnut trees, chestnuts, elders, snowy mespils and euodias.
These fruit trees are hardier than those in modern orchards and need no support, but of course a few years will have to pass before they develop their final shape and size and bear fruit.

Because of the diversity of fruit tree varieties fruit will be available from midsummer till late autumn and the maintenance of these trees will be nature friendly.

The orchard will be open to residents and visitors to the city and at the same time it will create a pleasant environment for bees and other animals, so they can feel at home.

The planting of a public orchard is one of the goals established in the environmental protection programme for the City of Ljubljana 2014-2020 and part of activities within the framework of Ljubljana, European Green Capital 2016.

For the first five years the Agricultural Institute of Slovenia will be in charge of the maintenance of the orchard and the Environmental Protection Section for mowing the grass.
