Renovated republic square

Republic Square, the central city and national square in front of the Slovenian Parliament, has been completely renovated and from now on intended for events, pedestrians and cyclists only.

The Republic Square (Trg Republike) and the surrounding public facilities represent the central city surface of national importance due to the symbols of Slovenian independence and nationality on the square and next to it. On 26 June 1991 the President of the Republic of Slovenia Presidency, Milan Kučan, declared autonomy and independence of Slovenia at the Republic Square, and the Slovenian flag was raised in public for the first time.

Sadly, the Republic Square in the centre of Ljubljana served as a parking surface for half of a century, and with being renovated and completely closed of traffic, the important square of the Slovenian capital begins a new chapter.

The square platform and the construction renovation of the private underground garage were taking place simultaneously. The renovation was coordinated by the segment fields – from the south of the Republic Square to the north part towards the Slovenian Parliament.

The square platform is organised by the initial plans of the known Slovenian architect, Edvard Ravnikar, a student of Jože Plečnik. As it was initially planned, the final surface is paved with granite plates and cubes of the Pohorje tonalit in strips of various sizes and mostly East/West pattern. Only the surface facing the Šubičeva Street has a perpendicular pattern to the street. One of the interesting facts of the renovation is the Square is paved with over a million cubes.

The Government of the Republic of Slovenia has declared the Republic Square as a cultural monument of national importance in June 2014 due to its symbolic meaning.
