Renovation of the grudnovo nabrežje embankment
Ljubljana has been enriched by yet another upgraded footpath, where residents and visitors can take a stroll and enjoy the pleasant surroundings.
The renovation of Grudnovo nabrežje further extends the renovation of the right bank of the Ljubljanica. The first phase of the renovation has been completed, from Prule Bridge to the emergency services ramp near Hradetsky Bridge.
In line with the plan adopted by the Ljubljana Tourism institute and the City of Ljubljana, work on the renovation of the right bank of the Ljubljanica on Grudnovo nabrežje began in August 2011.
Under conceptual designs produced by the Trije Architects studio under the leadership of architect Andrej Mercina, the selected contractor, Hidrotehnik d.d. began establishing a footpath from Prule Bridge to the emergency services ramp near Hradetsky Bridge. At this time the first phase has been completed, which comprises a new footpath, stone consolidation of the river bed of the Ljubljanica and placing benches. A fruit tree has been planted alongside every bench and thus a fruit tree avenue has been established, where the flowering and the ripening fruit of the trees will intensify the enjoyment of the natural environment, and the shade provided above the benches will also offer pleasant surroundings in the summer months.
New stairs have also been built, which link the upper part with the new footpath along the Ljubljanica. On the upper part of the embankment the pavement has been newly asphalted and new benches installed, which will enable sitting on both sides and a view along the river. New rubbish bins have been installed next to every bench.
Tourism Ljubljana has dedicated €311,082 to this investment. The final accounts for the work carried out have not been settled, but it is reliably anticipated that the total allocated will not be exceeded.
The source of funding for the investment is concession fees from special games of chance, which are earmarked municipal funds. Tourism Ljubljana is the recipient of these dedicated funds, which under the Gaming Act are intended for investment in tourist infrastructure. In partnership with its founder, the City of Ljubljana, five years ago Tourism Ljubljana adopted a long-term plan for the investment of these funds in the renovation of the banks of the Ljubljanica which has been systematically implemented every year since.
The next phase of the management of the right bank of the Ljubljanica comprising the area all the way to Šentjakob most (St James’ Bridge) will be completed in spring 2012.
