Sculpture of the hostage back in place

A copy sculpture has been erected in Gramozna jama in Ljubljana, in place of a stolen 1957 bronze sculpture entitled The Hostage by academic sculptor Boris Kalin.

The Hostage sculpture was stolen from Gramozna jama on the night of 22-23 September 2011.
In an extensive police investigation which followed, in October 2011 detectives from Bežigrad police station found the extensively damaged but most important parts of the stolen statue. The parts found were taken to the Borut Kamšek foundry in Volavlje near Ljubljana for reconstruction, with the entire process taking place under the watchful eyes of an expert commission, whose members were Acad Prof Dr Milček Komelj, art historian – commission president and members Acad Prof Drago Tršar, Acad Sculptor (a pupil of Boris Kalin) and Viktor Gojkovič MA, Acad Sculptor and consultant restorer. The commission's tasks were monitoring and final approval of the work of the sculptor and foundry so that the restored sculpture would be as similar as possible to the original. The copy of The Hostage sculpture, which has stood in Gramozna jama since 18 July 2012, was made from the reconstructed original.

The cost of reconstructing the original and the copy of the sculpture came to €38,160 including VAT. The original statue was insured against theft, and the City of Ljubljana was reimbursed the sum of €31,800 by the insurance company.

The memorial complex in Gramozna jama was designed by architect Vinko Glanz in 1955 and opened in 1957. In 2003, Gramozna jama and the memorial complex with The Hostage sculpture were proclaimed a Cultural Monument of Local Importance.

The reconstructed original, the work of academic sculptor Matjaž Rebec, is to be stored in the Museum and Galleries of the City of Ljubljana.
