Showcasing ljubljana as european green capital 2015

In Brussels on 24 May 2013 a City of Ljubljana delegation showcased Ljubljana’s vision, cases of good practice and communication strategy on the road to the selection of our city as European Green Capital.

Ljubljana is one of four finalists competing for the title of European Green Capital 2015. The aim of this initiative is to express recognition of and to reward local efforts to improve the environment, economy and quality of life in cities. Ljubljana is in a four-cornered fight with Bristol, Brussels and Glasgow for the title. On 24 May, all four finalists had a chance to showcase to an international jury their vision and cases of good practice, for which Ljubljana can be a role model to other cities, as well as their city’s communication activities through which they are changing habits and encouraging residents and visitors alike to act in an environmentally friendly way.

Since 2007, when Ljubljana adopted its vision for sustainable development up to 2025, we have focused a great deal of effort into major infrastructure projects that are important for the environment and quality of life and sustainable development. We have designed and adopted a series of strategic development documents and in the past six years implemented more than 600 major and smaller projects that have contributed to the quality of life of Ljubljana’s residents.

The final decision of the expert jury on the winner and bearer of the coveted title of European Green Capital 2015 is to be announced at the official closing ceremony in Nantes, France, this year’s European Green Capital, on 14 June 2013. Mayor Zoran Janković, enthused by the team and presentation in Brussels, stated that with its current classification and successful discussions with the international expert commission, Ljubljana is already a winner regardless of June’s final result.
