Slovenian athletes hall of fame

The ‘Slovenian Athletes Hall of Fame’, dedicated to the memory of the best Slovenian sports stars whose exceptional sporting achievements were confirmed by international measure, has opened in the foyer of the Stožice Centre.

The Slovenian Athletes Hall of Fame was founded by the Society of Slovenian Sports Journalists in 2011, and opened its doors in the foyer of the Stožice Centre on Wednesday 19 December 2012. The desire is to preserve the best Slovenian sports stars whose exceptional sporting achievements were confirmed by international measure in the long-term national consciousness. They would also like to conserve equipment and other sporting items linked with Slovenian sports stars and historical sporting events from articles and contributions from already-retired journalist colleagues and others.

There are currently 22 sportsmen and women in the Slovenian Athletes Hall of Fame who competed up to the mid-1970s. They are Rudolf Cvetko, Peter Šumi, Stane Derganc, Josip Primožič Tošo, Ludvik Starič, Janez Polda , Stanko Lorger, Miroslav Steržaj, Jože Šlibar, Janez Žirovnik, Draga Stamejčič Pokovec, Ivo Daneu, Albin Felc, Nataša Urbančič Bezjak, Aljoša Žorga, Rudi Hiti, Branko Oblak, Vinko Jelovac, Mima Jaušovec and the rowing eight from the Tokyo Olympics.

The first two sportsmen - Leon Štukelj and Miro Cerar – were inducted into the Slovenian Athletes Hall of Fame last year on the basis of voting for the sportsman of the century in which they received the most votes in 2000.
