Šmartno pri litiji joins rcero ljubljana

On 24 October 2012, the Šmartno pri Litiji local authority signed an accord on common waste management at the Ljubljana Regional Waste Management Centre - RCERO Ljubljana.

The project to upgrade RCERO Ljubljana is the largest Slovenian project in the problematic waste management field and is 65.88% co-financed by EU Cohesion Funding. The City of Ljubljana is the project’s leading investor, while it now includes a total of 29 local authorities from the broader Central Slovenian region.

Two parts of the project, a treatment plant for leachate water and a disposal site have already been constructed. The City of Ljubljana signed a €112million contract with Strabag at the end of September for the third, most demanding part, the construction of waste treatment facilities. Ground and preparatory works for the tasks which will be performed by Slovenian Strabag have already been carried out.

It is anticipated that Šmartno will begin to deliver waste to Barje in 2015, when the waste treatment facilities have been constructed. The local authority will not be financially burdened, as it will pay just 5% more than the seven owners of Ljubljana Public Holdings for its waste treatment and disposal.

Alongside the City of Ljubljana, the project now includes 28 other local authorities (Brezovica, Dobrova-Polhov Gradec, Dol pri Ljubljani, Horjul, Ig, Medvode, Škofljica, Velike Lašče, Domžale, Kamnik, Komenda, Trzin, Lukovica, Moravče, Vodice, Mengeš, Grosuplje, Ivančna gorica, Dobrepolje, Ribnica, Loški Potok, Sodražica, Cerklje na Gorenjskem, Bloke, Žiri, Gorenja vas-Poljane, Koper andn Šmartno pri Litiji).
The whole project, for which the European Commission issued consent in April 2009, is led and managed by the Ljubljana public company Snaga, d.o.o. by authority of the City of Ljubljana and the other local authorities.
