St Nicholas procession

Accompanied by hooves, hell and angels, St Nicholas will be visiting Ljubljana city centre on Monday 5 December.

We’ll be eagerly waiting for St Nicholas at 5pm on Monday 5 December 2011 in Ljubljana Castle courtyard.

The St Nicholas procession starts at Ljubljana Castle this year, from where he will ride the funicular down to Ljubljana city centre. As usual, he’ll be accompanied on his way by hooves, hell and a choir of angels, who will be giving out biscuits, fruit and sweets to children. The procession will move on to Krekov trg, Ciril Metodov trg, Stritarjeva ulica and finish on Prešeren Square. As per tradition, the angels will reward good children, with hooves and hell to scare the naughty ones. St Nicholas will address the visitors before disappearing inside the Franciscan Church with his accompaniment.

St Nicholas Fair

From 10am to 8pm from Saturday 3 to Tuesday 6 December 2011, Prešeren Square plays host to the St Nicholas Fair.

Diverse presents suitable for the traditional St Nicholas gift-giving will be on sale from festively decorated stalls.
The tradition of St Nicholas, who brings children gifts on the evening before his name day of 6 December, is a favourite part of Slovenian folk tradition and was first mentioned in written sources in 1839.
