Summer at the international centre of graphic arts

Every Tuesday evening, the International Centre of Graphic Arts (MGLC) in Tivoli Mansion is putting on free summer events, including graphic workshops for children, concerts and film screenings.

Graphic workshops for children

A rich array of genre and themed graphic workshops intended for children aged 6-12 run every Tuesday from 6pm to 7.30pm in the courtyard in front of the Tivoli Mansion. The themed entry point for the workshops is taken from the exhibition 'the Big Ones!', which is on show in the MGLC gallery and showcases large-format graphic works. At the workshops, children explore the most diverse creative techniques and the relationship between size and the importance of content: nature, summer, art and ourselves. The workshops are led by artistic mentors Meta Škoflek, Katja Mali and Anja Zver.

24 July - BIG trees
Trees are among the most important of Tivoli's inhabitants. The children look at them, then transfer their observations to a large board upon which magnificent fantasy trees are produced. The techniques used are drawing, painting and collaging.

31 July – BIG impressions on the roads to Tivoli
The children make plates or other forms from clay and upon them imprint motifs that they found most inspirational on their way from home to Tivoli. The plates form a mosaic that illustrates their routes. The techniques are clay work and off-printing.

7 August - BIG old pictures in a new way
We will get to know famous graphic works from art history. We will all choose our own reproduction and interpret it in our own way. At the end every child puts their work on display.

14 August - BIG comic book heroes
At the start of the workshop, we renew our acquaintance with comic book heroes. Then each selects their own 'hero' and depicts him or her together with an accompanying text. The techniques are comics and drawing.

21 August - BIG tree spirits
Trees have a soul. Everyone chooses their own tree and depicts its essence in mask form. The masks are put in place and create the ambience of an installation.

28 August - BIG good wishes
I make a printed cloth and give it to you! To round off the workshops, the children use the techniques of stencilling and monoprinting to off-print on pieces of cloth. At the end, the cloth will be turned into something good and given to a loved one as a present. The workshop concept is by Anja Zver.

July concerts by Slovene vocalists in the MGLC gallery

The concerts are held in partnership with the GODIBODI Institute every Tuesday at 8pm in the MGLC gallery.

24 July - Gordana Hleb and Jerneja Grebenšek
Soprano Gordana Hleb studied at Graz University, where she completed her Master's degree with honours in 2004.
Her vocal performances have been further refined with Helga Mueller Molinari (Milan), Irina Romishevskaja (Moscow), Patricia Craig (New York) and Krasimira Stojanova (Vienna). At a very early age, she made her debut at the Slovenian National Theatre Ljubljana in the opera Janko in Metka (Hansel and Gretel) and since then has performed a wide range of opera roles. In 2005 she became the opera soloist in Graz. She has given numerous concerts at home and abroad. Last year she worked regularly with the Quartissimo string quartet, and she has also given many concerts with the renowned Serbian singer-songwriter Đorđe Balašević.
Pianist Jerneja Grebenšek graduated from the Academy of Music in Ljubljana under Prof Aci Bertoncelj, and completed her artistic specialisation under Prof Laszlo Baranyay. At the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz, under Prof Käthe Wittlich she completed her Master's in piano chamber music. She has further refined her abilities with many master classes, including with Professors Vassily Lobanov, Jakob Lateiner, Paulo Gualdi, Rita Kinka and the Altenberg Trio. She has won many awards at national and international competitions. In 2005 she performed a series of solo recitals in the PIANISSIMO cycle, organised by the Slovene Association of Piano Teachers - EPTA Slovenia. Many concerts, both solo and as part of ensembles, have been recorded for Radio Slovenia and ÖRF. She is currently teaching at the Secondary School Artistic Programme at the Fran Korun Koželjski Music School in Velenje and at the Faculty of Pedagogy, University of Maribor.
The MGLC concerts will see the musicians performing evenings of songs and operatic arias (R. Strauss, G. Verdi, L. M. Škerjanc, M. De Falla, P. I. Tchaikovsky, S. Rachmaninoff).

31 July - Vesna Godler
Vesna Godler creates her own music with elements of jazz, ethno, blues and rock. She has performed solo with opera singer Kian De Bonaldi. She is the vocalist in the Didiwa group, formed in 2007 and also featuring guitarists Rok Tomšič and Klemen Koman.
For her MGLC concert she has prepared a programme of which she is especially fond and containing elements of jazz and blues. She will interpret songs by well-known and less-well-known black musicians. The feeling is as it was described by composer Antonín Dvořák:
"In the Negro melodies of America I discover all that is needed for a great and noble school of music. They are pathetic, tender, passionate, melancholy, solemn, religious, bold, merry, gay or what you will".

Film screenings
