Summer in ljubljana

The 'Summer in Ljubljana Old Town' festival has begun, which concludes in August with an event entitled 'Night in Ljubljana Old Town'.

Each year, the traditional Summer in Ljubljana Old Town festival adds to the vibrancy of city life in the Slovenian capital with a programme of classical music concerts, most of which are free, held in the picturesque surroundings of the old city centre.

This year, the festival features 27 concerts showcasing 315 musicians from 10 countries. Special emphasis will be given to talented young Slovene musicians. Besides classical music concerts, part of the programme of events has in recent years been devoted to jazz. The jazz element of the festival comprises a series of open-air concerts on Friday evenings in the picturesque surroundings of the Gornji trg square.

Among festival highlights, it's worth mentioning an appearance by the renowned Spanish guitarist Ricardo Gallén and the monumental dramatic Baroque opera Dido and Aeneas performed by the Vocal Academy of Ljubljana choir, the winner of last year's European Grand Prix for Choral Singing in Varna.

The festival will also host three outstanding string quartets: the Dominant Quartet, one of Russia's foremost string ensembles and the Accord Quartet from Hungary, who have received several international awards. The summer festival winds up with a concert by the Apollon Quartet, a Czech string ensemble famous for their innovative approach to music, who perform not only classical pieces but also jazz standards. A string quartet will also accompany the renowned Italian clarinettist Claudio Mansutti in Ljubljana.
