Tactile path in vič
The City of Ljubljana continues to implement a set of activities to increase the accessibility to public areas and institutions for persons with disabilities, i.e. one of the most vulnerable groups of road users. Thus, the installation of tactile markings and signs has been conducted in Vič according to project designers, the Adkrajine Company. The installations cover the area between Tržaška, Jamova, Langusova and Groharjeva Street.
The tactile paving in the form of blisters and corduroys enables the visually impaired persons easier orientation and spatial guidance. The path made of tactile paving is designed to lead visually impaired persons from the point of entry to their destination.
The path in Vič is only one of the projected routes in the city centre that will provide visually impaired persons the access to relevant public institutions in the near future. Every route is designed in relation to bus stops of public passenger traffic. The bus stops are the entry points that should provide a proper access to specific institutions and areas.
The visually impaired persons orient themselves according to the existing roadsides (kerbstones, walls, etc.). In areas with no physical boundaries and at dangerous locations, the existing markings need to be complemented with tactile paving. This leads visually impaired persons to the roadside or to the traffic-lights with audible signal devices where they obtain the information on the road-crossing direction and the number of lanes. The corduroy tactile paving has the guiding function, whereas the blister paving designates a potential danger or a change. The blister paving marks the boundary between a pedestrian area and a traffic route. If the blister paving forms the square design, it normally marks the crossroads area – visually impaired persons can then decide which direction they will take.
The tactile path in Vič provides access to three important institutions: Institution for Blind and Visually Impaired Youth, Inter-Municipal Society of the Blind and Visually-Impaired Ljubljana, and Slovene Association of Societies of Blind and Visually Impaired. The path is connected to Tobačna bus stations by the Tržaška Street.
