Ten years of the BicikeLJ system

We rode the bicycles in the BicikeLJ system on the streets of Ljubljana for the first time exactly ten years ago.

Back then, we could not imagine that the system would be so popular today that we would more than double the number of stations and bikes in that period.

Ever since its launch, on 12 May 2011, when we set up 30 stations with a total of 300 bicycles, BicikeLJ bikes have been very popular. Already on the first day, we recorded 787 rentals, and to date, more than 217,000 users have rented bikes, taking in total close to eight million rides. Nearly all rides were shorter than an hour and, therefore, free for users.

Today, with the new station on Prušnik Street, which was set up on the initiative of students of the local Diocesan Classical Gymnasium, there are 73 stations in the BicikeLJ system with a total of 730 bicycles, and by the end of this year, more than 80 stations with over 800 bikes are expected to be included.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the BicikeLJ system, Jean-François Decaux, one of the CEOs of the JCDecaux Group, of which the Europlakat company is a member, which manages the BicikeLJ system as part of a public-private partnership, visited Ljubljana. On this occasion, Jean-François Decaux said: »Ten years ago, Ljubljana became the first city in Central Europe to establish a self-service bicycle rental system for citizens and tourists through a public-private partnership. I am very proud that today we can celebrate the achievements of the BicikeLJ in Ljubljana, which is one of our most successful systems in the world, as on average, each bike is used as many as eight times every day. In this decade, the number of stations and bikes has more than doubled, which shows the attachment of residents and visitors to our service.«
