The ‘cavalier’ rides again

For the fourth year running, the ‘Cavalier’ environmentally friendly vehicles are on the streets of Ljubljana city centre.

The Cavaliers – electrically-powered vehicles – are a particularly welcome sight to older visitors, tourists and people going to the central market. With their help, it’s much easier to get about, look around or go shopping in central Ljubljana.

Supported by Ljubljana Tourism, the cavalier vehicle service has been available to Ljubljana’s residents and visitors as part of ‘Transport on demand’ within the CIVITAS ELAN project since 2008. Through the introduction of a satellite tracking system for buses, Ljubljana Passenger Transport (LPP) has begun to develop an application for people with impaired mobility which will enable these passengers to book a low-floor bus with a ramp throughout the entire Ljubljana Passenger Transport network.

‘Transport on demand’

The ‘Transport on Demand’ system for people with impaired mobility works by the passenger calling LPP control centre on +386 1/58 22 425 or +386 51/44 99 92, where the request is made for transport on a particular day or at a specific time and information is provided on transport options, and as a result the booking is confirmed. The LPP control centre forwards the information about a passenger with special needs to the driver, who at a specific time and place welcomes the passenger on board in an appropriate way. Thereby, movement-impaired people avoid unnecessary stress and the driver is informed in advance about a passenger who needs assistance and plans can be made accordingly.

This innovation that LPP is to begin testing in April will be implemented as a long-term measure, it is anticipated from September 2012 on. The valuable experience obtained during the testing period will also be co-ordinated with organisations related to people with impaired movement. All experiences and additional suggestions are welcome by e-mail to mail@lpp.si.

The ‘Cavalier’

The ‘Cavaliers’ which have successfully broken new ground in the ‘Transport on Demand’ project, can be seen on the streets of Ljubljana from Monday 2 April daily from 9am to 6pm and on Sundays from 8am to 5pm all the way to 30 October, when their summer season closes.

The Cavalier also runs out to Žale cemetery on 31 October and 1 November 2012.

Use of the Cavalier is free and can be pre-ordered by calling either 031/666 331 or 031/666 332.
