The dragon carnival

On 1 March 2014, on Shrove Saturday, the traditional Dragon Carnival themed after the 2000th anniversary of the Roman Emona took place in the Slovenian capital.

The carnival festival featured an organised procession of traditional carnival figures on the streets of Ljubljana with typical masks rooted in pagan tradition in Slovenia, such as "kurent", "laufar", "morostar", "pokač", "orač" and numerous other masks by the children of elementary schools in Ljubljana.

This year, in addition to the traditional green dragon, the procession was led by Ljubljana's mascot, the Romans, due to the theme of the carnival – the 2000th anniversary of founding the Roman Emona, which will be celebrated in Ljubljana in 2014/15. Children prepared carnival figures depicting life in the Roman Empire and characters from Roman mythology. They were active in creating the Roman Emona carnival figures during the school year under the professional guidance of the City Museum of Ljubljana and the Puppet Theatre Ljubljana. This year, the organisers invited the adult carnival groups from entire Slovenia.

The Dragon Carnival was organised in three sections: the children's section with elementary schools and day-care centres; the ethnological section with carnival figures and masks from Slovenian folk tradition and organised groups of carnival figures.

The announcement of the winning carnival figures was announced after the procession at the Kongresni Trg (Congress Square) and Mayor Zoran Jankovič presented the awards.
