The icorn director visits city hall

On 27 February 2012, Helge Lunde, the Director of the ICORN International Refuge Network of Persecuted Writers was welcomed to Ljubljana City Hall by Aleš Čerin, Deputy Mayor pro tempore carrying out the functions of Mayor of the City of Ljubljana.

The guest outlined to the Deputy Mayor pro tempore carrying out the functions of Mayor of the City of Ljubljana ICORN’s operational network, and took the opportunity that the occasion presented to sign Ljubljana’s Memorial Book.

Helge Lunde was in Ljubljana to attend the Fabula 2012 Festival, as part of which she was a participant in the focal point of the festival, at the Slovene Society on Tuesday 28 February 2012, an evening of socially committed writers entitled "ICORN International Refuge Network of Persecuted Writers: writers, heralds of change?".

The focus outlined above was the work of the City of Ljubljana, the Slovenian PEN Writers’ Association, and the ICORN network, upon which four writers, members of the ICORN network, were showcased: hosted writers Zineb el Rhazoui (Morocco) and Ali Amar (Morocco), who have recently arrived in Ljubljana, as well as Manal al-Sheikh (Iraq) and Mansur Rajiha (Yemen), hosted writers from the city of Stavanger in Norway. The writers discussed the current situation in the Middle East and the role of artists in ‘turbulent times’. Helge Lunde and Dr Uroš Grilc, Head of the City of Ljubljana’s Culture Department presented in detail the operations and activities of the ICORN network here and around the world.

In the year when Ljubljana was the World Book Capital (23 April 2010 – 23 April 2011), it joined an important social-artistic – becoming a member of the ICORN network that offers shelter to all those writers that have been forced to leave their homelands for reasons of restrictions in their freedom of speech.
