The Tree of the Year 2021 is the Caucasian wingnut

On 28 November, the day when we celebrate the efforts of people who care for trees in cities, we announced the Tree of the Year 2021 in Ljubljana. In the run for the title, the Caucasian wingnut, growing at the intersection of the streets Linhartova ulica, Knobleharjeva ulica and Fabianijeva ulica, won among 32 candidates.

"This event is a celebration and at the same time a holiday. Although we say that we celebrate the efforts of people who care for trees in cities, this is not our holiday, it is a tree holiday," said Deputy Mayor Prof. Janez Koželj at the announcement.

The main aim of the Tree of the Year campaign is to raise awareness of the importance of trees and their contribution to the quality of life in the city. With the competition, we want to promote the observation of trees and encourage citizens to care for them because everyone can contribute to their preservation with their attitude towards urban trees.

We have planted over 600 new trees this year

In the City of Ljubljana, we are aware of the exceptional importance of trees and therefore strive to preserve every tree, if possible, and plant new ones. This year alone, we planted over 600 trees in cooperation with the public company Voka Snaga.

We are delighted when citizens in the immediate vicinity perceive the beauty of trees, which changes with the seasons, and are aware that they offer them many benefits.

Ljubljana is an internationally recognized Tree City

Ljubljana has been recognized as a Tree City within the Tree Cities of the World program for two years in a row. The award was presented to us by the Arbor Day Foundation and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), which in this way encourage cities to take care of their trees. Ljubljana is one of 120 cities from 63 countries with this title.
