Together For a More Beautiful Ljubljana

Again this year, Ljubljana is preparing the traditional spring environmental campaign For a More Beautiful Ljubljana, held between 22 March, World Water Day, and 22 April, World Earth Day. During this time, we are planning a number of activities with which we will show that we care about our environment and that we will work together to ensure that Ljubljana is a clean, green and orderly city.

At the start of this year's campaign, we are drawing attention to the concern for clean drinking water and the control over outdoor advertising surfaces in the area of the City of Ljubljana.

World Water Day – Accelerating Change

We traditionally start the campaign For a More Beautiful Ljubljana on 22 March, World Water Day, which is this year held under the slogan Accelerating change.

In Ljubljana, we are proud to drink high-quality natural drinking water that has not been treated with technological processes and no chemicals have been added. Our city lies on the water, and water protection areas cover as much as 44% of the surface of the City of Ljubljana, that is, almost 60% of the populated area of the city.

In order to further secure clean drinking water, we are implementing the Clean for You project, Drainage and treatment of wastewater in the area of the Ljubljana Field aquifer, within the scope of which we are increasing the coverage of the public sewerage system and building the C0 connecting channel. This project will eliminate as many as 6,400 septic tanks, of which 4,500 are within the City of Ljubljana and 1,900 in the area of Vodice and Medvode.

By the end of the year, when we complete the project, we will raise the coverage of the sewage system to as much as 98%. In 2007, it was 68%, while in 2021, it was 92%. With the regulation of the sewerage structure in the entire area of the City of Ljubljana, we will further secure clean drinking water and ensure the quality of life for generations to come.

Drinking fountain in Ljubljana

In Ljubljana, you can refresh yourself with high-quality drinking water practically at every step, as there are many drinking fountains set up in the city center, on children's playgrounds and in other green and recreational areas. The opening of drinking fountains, which will start when the temperatures allow it, will be gradual; before a drinking fountain can start working again, each one is thoroughly inspected and cleaned, and if necessary, maintenance work is carried out. Before the drinking water is available to passers-by, employees of Voka Snaga take samples, and after receiving the relevant analysis results, the drinking fountains are activated.

We regulate the field of outdoor advertising

After the control of advertising facilities was transferred to municipal inspections last year, the City of Ljubljana Inspectorate started targeted control in the field of advertising at the beginning of the year.
The Inspectorate carries out inspections on public and private surfaces, they have started at arterial roads into the city and continue by city blocks within the district communities. Inspection procedures are ongoing, so far, 1,103 structures have been inspected, for which required improvement decisions have been issued for 64 structures for advertising, and 126 structures have been removed. In 2023, three administrative enforcements were carried out when an outsourced contractor removed illegal advertising structures because the advertisers themselves did not want to remove them. Decisions have already been issued to stop the inspection process for 133 structures, 89 structures were removed, while the rest were found to be legal during the inspection process or were legalized during the inspection process. The activities will continue until only legal advertising structures remain in the area of the City of Ljubljana.

Let's jointly take care of a clean, orderly and green Ljubljana!

As part of the campaign For a More Beautiful Ljubljana, we are preparing a number of activities about which we will keep you informed, among other things, cleanup activities will be carried out at various locations around Ljubljana, planned by the City of Ljubljana, district communities and tourist associations, they are also organized by other groups and individuals who care about our environment. The public company Voka Snaga will again provide bags and gloves to the organizers of cleanup activities this year and remove collected waste.
City of Ljubljana City Administration employees will also join the cleaning activities.
