Together For a More Beautiful Ljubljana

Again this year, we are preparing the traditional spring environmental campaign For a More Beautiful Ljubljana, held between 22 March, World Water Day, and 22 April, World Earth Day.

During this time, we will once again prepare a number of activities, with which we will show that we care about our environment and that we work together to ensure that Ljubljana is a clean, green and orderly city. This year, we will focus, among other things, on caring for trees and high-quality drinking water, the importance of self-sufficiency, environmentally friendly energy production and responsible waste management.

World Water Day

In Ljubljana, we are proud to drink high-quality natural drinking water that has not been treated with technological processes. Warmer days are coming, so the public company Voka Snaga employees will start inspecting and connecting drinking fountains around the city. This year, two new drinking fountains will be set up at the Grain Bridge and on the Petkovšek Embankment. As many as 59 drinking fountains are distributed throughout the city centre, on children's playgrounds and other green and recreational areas, where you will soon be able to freshen up with refreshing, high-quality drinking water.
This spring, we will equip drinking fountains with plates with a QR code that will lead to information about drinking water in Ljubljana, as well as quotes from poets and writers on the theme of water.

We are choosing the tree-lined street of the year

As part of the campaign, we will choose the tree-lined street of the year for the first time. The expert jury has already selected seven finalists, from which the citizens will choose the tree-lined street, which will then symbolically represent all the other trees in the city for the whole year. Voting on our website is open from 22 March to 7 April 2024, and we will announce the tree-lined street of the year on 22 April, World Earth Day. In the first half of this year, we plan to plant as many as 384 trees in various locations around the city.

Man campaign

In this year's socially responsible campaign Man, take care of your city, we will focus on the issue of small waste (tissues, small papers, small packaging) on the streets and in green areas. As these have been on the rise recently, we will raise awareness about this issue through a campaign on social networks and in the media, and at the same time, try to influence the change in citizens' habits. The campaign's key message is: »Man, take care of your city and contribute to its cleanliness in such a way that you create less waste, properly separate the necessary ones, responsibly dispose of them in appropriate bins and containers, and use reusable packaging. Too much discarded waste, despite the constant work of city services, sullies our beautiful city and attracts various animals, which together with the wind carry the waste all around.«

We encourage self-sufficiency

Spring is the time when Ljubljana's gardens come to life again after the winter break. In Ljubljana, we have nine areas for gardening, namely, Dravlje, Štepanjsko naselje, Ježica, Rakova jelša, Vojkova, Iga Grudna, Grba, Vižmarje-Brod and Muste, where many citizens grow vegetables in an environmentally friendly way. In order to be as successful as possible, we organize admission-free gardening workshops at teaching gardens Grba and Vojkova. We will start this year's workshop season during the For a More Beautiful Ljubljana campaign. We will inform you about the exact dates and content of the workshops.

Solar power plants

In October 2023, in the City Hall, we signed a contract with our partners for the project Green energy on the surfaces and facilities of the City of Ljubljana, within the framework of which we are setting up solar power plants. Together with the companies RESALTA d.o.o., RES ERP d.o.o. and Energetika Ljubljana, we have entered into a public-private partnership, within the framework of which we are already installing solar power plants on the roofs of primary schools, kindergartens, health care centres and sports and cultural facilities. We will install a total of 51 power plants, with a total capacity of almost 5 MWp, and the guaranteed annual production will exceed 5,200 MWh.

The installation of the solar power plants will be completed by July this year, and currently, among other things, the installation of the solar power plant on the roof of the Ilirija Sports Centre is underway.

Responsible management of hazardous waste

During the For a More Beautiful Ljubljana campaign, the public company Voka Snaga will set up a mobile collection point for hazardous waste from households at various locations in Ljubljana and the surrounding municipalities, where they will collect motor and cooking oils, car batteries, batteries, cleaning agents, paints, varnishes and solvents, medications and pesticides, as well as small waste electrical and electronic equipment, cartridges/toners, monitors and computer accessories, electronic media, small kitchen appliances, power tools, used telephones, light bulbs, gas lamps and electric toys.
The For a More Beautiful Ljubljana campaign traditionally ends with the cleaning of the Ljubljanica River and a varied cultural program. In the cleaning of the Ljubljanica River, which will take place on Saturday, 20 April 2024, divers, members of the Vivera Underwater Activities Society and other societies of the Slovenian Diving Federation, fishermen, firefighters, boatmen, rescuers and others who take care of the clean image of Ljubljana and the Ljubljanica River will participate.
