Tour of age-friendly louth province
On 3 and 4 July 2014 the town of Dundalk in Ireland held the first workshop of the AFE-INNOVNET project where they presented best practices of the Louth province in the field of age-friendly environments.
The City of Ljubljana, together with 28 partners from 16 EU states participates in the Thematic Network AFE-INNOVNET in the field of innovation for age-friendly environments. Their activities and the activities carried out for the elderly were presented at the workshop, which was held in the capital city of the county of Louth – in the town of Dundalk. Around 123,000 people live in the smallest Irish county of Louth, of which 13% are older than 65 years. The district is the first in Ireland to adopt the 'age-friendly strategy' in 2008 and as such sets the example for all the other Irish cities. Several stakeholders – the local community, research institutions, businesses, non-governmental organizations and older people are involved in design of age-friendly strategies, policies and programmes.
The workshop participants also examined the sheltered housing. 16 apartments were established together with the research institute. One of the apartments is intended for study visits and as an experimental home where potential residents can stay up to five days. It is a kind of a laboratory since residents speak about their experiences to experts who try to improve the living conditions in the apartments.
