Tropical plants in ljubljana

The Ljubljana Botanic Garden's Tropical Glasshouse, measuring over 500 square metres, mainly houses small-sized tropical plants which spread well under appropriate growth conditions and quickly become lush plants.

The Tropical Glasshouse is open to visitors on weekdays from 12 noon to 4 p.m. and on weekends from 10 a.m. to 12 noon and from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

International Orchid Show

The International Orchid Show, set to be held at the Ljubljana Botanic Garden's Tropical Glasshouse from 20 to 25 April, will display, among other things, a large number of plants donated by Ocean Orchids, a Slovenian company based in the village of Dobrovnik in the Pomurje region of Slovenia which, along with the Slovenian Orchid Society, organizes the show.

The show will feature a variety of different orchid species and varieties, which are tremendously popular for their uniquely shaped and brightly coloured flowers. Orchids will also be available for purchase. The show will be accompanied by a programme of lectures and workshops.

Ljubljana orchid

The orchids displayed at the International Orchid Show will include Ljubljana orchid, a hybrid created from several different orchid species by the Dutch-German company Anthura Arndt, which names most of its cross-breeds after cities from around the world. Ljubljana orchid, scientifically called Anthura Ljubljana, is a plant of the genus Phalaenopsis. It is the result of seven generations of cross-breeding, which means that it has a 50-year history.
