We were the world champions

The Museum and Galleries of Ljubljana, in co-operation with the Municipality of Ljubljana and the Intermedia Network production company, is staging the exhibition "We Were the World Champions. The never-ending ascent to the 1970 basketball gold and beyond".

Consisting of a number of photographs, the exhibition presents the Yugoslav basketball team’s history from the time it appeared at the first major competitions to the time it won the gold medal at the 1970 World Championship held in Ljubljana. The exhibition was opened in the presence of Ljubljana's Mayor, Mr Zoran Janković, and the basketball legend Boris Kristančič on Monday, 2 September 2013 in the Glass and Right Atriums of the Ljubljana City Hall, and will be on show until 22 September 2013. The exhibition is accompanied by the world premiere of the documentary We Were the World Champions produced by the Belgrade-based Intermedia Network.

Yugoslav basketball was a sports phenomenon in which Slovenian players took part from the very beginning. Between 1961 and 1991, the team won six bronze, ten silver and nine gold medals at European and World Championships and at the Olympic Games. In the words of Blaž Vurnik, the exhibition’s curator from MGML: “Yugoslav basketball is an unforgettable phenomenon. The only other teams recording such results in major competitions of the second half of the 20th century are those of the Soviet Union and the USA.”

The result achieved in Ljubljana in 1970 is the world champion title that was won for the first time and, simultaneously, the biggest success of the Slovenian basketball players Ivo Daneu, Aljoša Žorga and Vinko Jelovac who, when wearing the Yugoslav national team uniform in the 1960s and 1970s were setting the standards for Slovenian basketball. Visitors to the exhibition will be able to see complete footage of the Yugoslavia : USA match played at the Ljubljana World Championship and the cup received by the World Champions.

The exhibition is accompanied by the world premiere of the documentary We Were the World Champions which will be shown in the course of Eurobasket 2013. Produced by the Belgrade-based Intermedia Network, the film presents 50 people who in one way or another were involved in the development of Yugoslav basketball up to the historic victory – the first gold medal to be won by the Yugoslav national team at the World Basketball Championship on 24 May 1970 in Ljubljana's Tivoli Hall. The author and producer of the film is Zvonimir Šimunec, and the producer is Dejan Petrović. The script was written by Aleksandar Miletić and the film was directed by Ivica Vidanović.
