Winners of Marjan Rožanc Awards known

The Marjan Rožanc Awards, the highest recognitions of the City of Ljubljana in sports, were given this year to Luka Dončić, Žan Kranjec, Tatjana Polajnar and Lojze Pungerčič.

The award for outstanding sports achievements was presented to Luka Dončić

Luka Dončić personifies excellence, and not only in sports. He is a model of success in life in global competition. He is a combination of remarkable talent, work dedication, courageous decisions and the embodiment of human cosmopolitanism; cooperation and social sense; commitment to hard work and ease in excellence.

The award for outstanding sports achievements was presented to Žan Kranjec

Alpine skier Žan Kranjec achieved his first victory in the World Cup in Saalbach in the 2018/19 season, and in the next season he added a win in Adelboden and four placements on the winners’ podium. In the Olympic Games in Pyeongchang he won the fourth place in giant slalom. The 2019/20 season, which ended prematurely due to the epidemic, he finished at the 4th place in the World Cup giant slalom overall ranking.

The award for long-term work in the professional and organisational field was presented to Tatjana Polajnar

Tatjana Polajnar, one of the best and most recognisable Slovenian handball players of all time, has been for many years involved in Slovenian sports and has greatly contributed with her diligence to the development of sports in Ljubljana. After her sports career ended she became an active sports official, she contributed greatly to consolidating the position of women in sports, and now she is successfully serving as director of the Public Institute Sport Ljubljana, which is managing sports facilities and surfaces in the City of Ljubljana and is actively participating in the implementation of the sports strategy in Ljubljana.

The award for long-term work in the professional and organisational field was presented to Lojze Pungerčič

Lojze Pungerčič has been a constant in athletics for 65 years. At the beginning he was successfully competing in middle-distance running, then he went into coaching. In his long coaching career he trained many successful female and male athletes, who set over 30 state records in running at different distances and won almost 100 state champion titles.

He also holds a special place in the world of athletics because of his personal integrity which earned him great respect.

We have been presenting the Marjan Rožanc Awards since 1992. The awards are given to workers in sports, athletes, sports teachers, professional sports workers and sports journalists for their outstanding achievements.
