Park path paving with recycled construction material

On the way

We have invited artist Andraž Vogrinčič to make a spatial intervention in the park next to the Cukrarna (former sugar factory), with its history not well known to Ljubljana’s citizens, to provoke thinking about the surrounding area and the Cukrarna itself. The artist opted for an intervention in the park and used the construction material from the Cukrarna construction site to pave a central axis – a path running through the park from the crossroads to the Cukrarna. The path is paved with ground roofing material (granulate) which was once part of the Cukrarna building. And so, in a very explicit way, the spatial intervention connects the park with the Cukrarna.

The title of the intervention On the way (Na poti) not only alludes to the coming change of use of the factory from a sugar refinery to a centre of culture but it also quite literary conveys a spatial intervention. The artist is recycling the removed material and is using it in combination with sand, which is marked by the past, to pave the path leading to the building where new history of this space and the city shall be made. We could add that it also alludes to people’s awareness of a new circular path – circular economy.

At the end of 2018, Cukrarna, the former sugar factory started to develop into the biggest exhibition space in the region. The building is located in a brownfield area in the immediate vicinity of the city centre, and with its new cultural activities and comprehensive spatial planning around the factory it will undoubtedly contribute to the revitalisation of the desolate part of the city. We have decided to announce the future cultural area with projects located in its immediate surroundings. And so, the On the way intervention is the first project launching the programme Cukrarna Gallery, the new cultural space, the opening of which is planned in the spring of 2021.
