Main Theme: Creating a Vibrant Walkable City Centre through Sustainable Urban Mobility

By incorporating urban mobility and sustainability and by redeveloping pedestrian paths in historical cities, we can enhance or better yet create connectivity among buildings, services, public facilities, and green spaces, valuing built heritage and promoting active and sustainable mobility, synonymous with wellbeing, protecting cultural heritage, and social inclusion. The theme of 19th World Conference of Historical Cities in Ljubljana aims to present case studies, policies, practices, as well as to share knowledge for development of sustainable human-centred historic towns and cities.

1. Roundtables (Themes are intended for discussions among mayors, deputy mayors, and city representatives):

  • “Walkability as a factor in the quality and attractiveness of historic urban areas”: examples and good practices of how walkability improvement can positively impact the quality and attractiveness of historic urban areas in terms of preservation and revitalization, appeal, and overall quality of historic cities. The conference aims to identify strategies and best practices for enhancing these areas to ensure that they remain vibrant, livable, and culturally significant for future generations.
  • “Challenges and ways to implement sustainable mobility in historic cities”: examples and good practices promoting sustainable transportation options within urban areas that hold historical significance. Historic cities often feature narrow streets, dense urban fabric, and heritage sites that pose unique challenges and opportunities for transportation planning and mobility management.

2. Expert Meeting (Theme is geared towards experts):

“Sustainable mobility as a safeguard against the deterioration of cultural heritage”: examining the link between sustainable mobility and the preservation of cultural heritage, the conference aims to explore innovative strategies, best practices, and collaborative approaches to protect and promote cultural heritage while advancing sustainability goals and ensuring their long-term resilience and future relevance.
