United with retailers and hospitality service providers against plastic bags in Ljubljana
As the City of Ljubljana is striving to reduce the use of plastic bags, we presented our cooperation with retailers and hospitality service providers in the city centre of Ljubljana on World Oceans Day 2018. Many of them are already offering paper shopping bags, which we appreciate and support, and that is why we are encouraging others who have still not adopted this behaviour to do so.
We have called upon retailers and hospitality service providers in the city centre to offer only paper or biodegradable shopping bags to their customers instead of plastic bags. Over 40 retailers and hospitality service providers have joined us already, we are presenting them on a prominently featured subpage and they have already received or will soon get a special sticker informing customers that they do not use plastic bags. We are inviting all other retailers and hospitality service providers to cooperate.
Namely, as a public opinion survey conducted in 2017 has revealed, the majority of Ljubljana’s citizens (as many as 86 percent) support the introduction of biodegradable bags. It should also not be ignored, that according to the assessment of the European Commission each resident in Slovenia uses 466 single-use bags per year, placing a heavy burden on the environment.
